The day came around and Newcastle fans didn’t think the club stood a chance of getting through to the premier league, until a turn of events happened which led Newcastle to victory.
We hear some comments from loyal fans on the day, James Porter, says: “At the start of the match hopes were up for Newcastle being promoted on a high with a win, however all though we all knew it was possible few of the toon army believed the league would be ours with Brighton sitting one point above us in the league and being big favourites for their last game of the season against villa. When entering the fortress named st James’s park our home to take my usual seat the atmosphere was electric! The flags where waving in gallogate end whilst the Newcastle united tunes were being belted out at full volume by the mighty Geordie boys and girls! Newcastle started the game at full tempo having a large percentage of possession and comfortably being the beater team and with Newcastle taking an early lead via ayoze Perez the fans started to think what if as every one had one eye on Brighton match in which villa were still holding them to 0-0 it was a very tense atmosphere in the stadium as Newcastle united were playing their part and securing the match however villa has been peppering the Brighton goal with around 8 shots on target in the first half but non successfully bursting the net.”
Another fan, Steve Dawson, says: “Knowing we where already up winning the championship with 1 minute to go due to the other team losing, made it even more memorable, the place erupted jumping shouting and chanting!”
